Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Stress, Insomnia, and More in Arlington, VA
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line treatment method for several mental health conditions, from anxiety to sleep problems. As such, it’s a cornerstone of treatment here at Virginia Lindahl, Ph.D. Therapy and Psych Testing. My practice in Arlington, Virginia, serves children, teens, and adults who want to make meaningful changes in the ways they think and react. Using practical, evidence-based strategies, a cognitive behavioral therapist can help with anxiety, depression, OCD, insomnia, or stress that’s starting to run the show.
What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
CBT is a form of talk therapy that teaches clients to notice unhelpful patterns in their thoughts and behaviors, then replace them with skills that support healthier outcomes. CBT is goal-oriented and skill-based. We work on what’s happening now, while still making space for the experiences that shaped you.
How CBT Works
CBT is based on a simple idea: Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all influence one another. In sessions, you’ll learn tools to shift negative cycles for good. Depending on your needs, our work may include:
- Identifying thinking patterns that increase distress
- Practicing coping strategies you can use outside of sessions
- Building routines that support mood, focus, and resilience
- Gradual behavior changes that reduce avoidance and fear
There are different kinds of CBT, so treatment is never one-size-fits-all. For example, there’s CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) that targets the habits and anxiety that keep sleep problems going. There’s mindfulness-based CBT, or MBCT, which blends cognitive strategies with mindfulness skills. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is sometimes used to treat trauma.
